My Friend Fran
a story by Lou Kobbs
Fran Delaney was diagnosed with Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, when he was at the height of his career and his golf game. As someone who had a long career fixing problems and who always faced challenges head on, he decided the best way to fight back was to increase awareness and raise funds for research. With the support of family and friends, the Fran Delaney Foundation was formed over eight years ago. Over the years, the Foundation has built a strong network of 750 volunteers. To date, the organization has held over 60 events. When Fran formed the Foundation, he had a dream and a goal of raising $1M for ALS Research and with the funds raised from the 2008 Golf Tournament, the total raised by the Foundation exceeded $2M! Fran would be so pleased and so proud!!!
With the money raised, we have made grants to the Day Neuromuscular Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Jeffrey Rothstein at the Johns Hopkins Packard Center for ALS Research and to the ALS-Therapy Development Institute. Although Fran lost his long and courageous battle against ALS on March 7, 2005, the Fran Delaney Foundation continues to fight in his memory and honor.
